Bethe Correia Doubles Down with Non-Apology, Accuses Ronda Rousey of Failed Drug Test

As we reported yesterday, Bethe Correia (9-0) rocked the MMA world when she threw a suicide joke at Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey (11-0) during an interview with Brazilian media outlet “Combate.”

Rousey’s father committed suicide when she was eight-years-old, and many saw Correia’s jibe as inappropriate.

After the fallout from her statement, Correia tweeted an apology to Rousey:

Regardless of the sincerity of her apology, Correia should have stepped away from the situation after this, but instead she double downed in statements she made to Brazilian media {emphasis ours}:

“I was just showing her weak psychology for sports. I knew her father had died when she was a kid, but I didn’t know he committed suicide. Ronda humiliated me. She said I would have a meeting with Jesus, that she would humiliate me inside my house. So I responded talking about her history.

I said she ran away from home, her past with bulimia, failing a drug test in the Olympics. But I didn’t know about this episode with her father. Ronda has a bad habit of humiliating people. She created this media that she’s a superhero, so that makes her comfortable to talk trash about anyone. I’ve seen UFC ring girls complaining about it, even about her thinking she’s prettier. She talks about anyone who gets press.”

Rousey has never failed a drug test, including during the Olympics, where she won a Bronze medal in Judo at the Beijing Games.

Some in the MMA community excused Correia’s statements due to Rousey’s own often provocative and insulting comments directed at fellow fighters. We agree that Rousey’s hands aren’t clean in this regard, but her past statements do not negate what Correia said. Bethe Correia needs to own her comments, and learn to sell fights without false accusations and low blows.

Rousey and Correia meet at “UFC 190: Rousey vs Correia” in Brazil on August 1.
