Joanna Champion Is Still Champion

So many times after a fight commentators say the victor gave the viewers and their opponent a striking clinic. Most of the time this is hyperbole. Anyone saying that about Joanna Champion’s (10-0) win over Jessica Penne (12-3) last night at UFC Berlin is, however, right on point. Just like Jedrzejczyk’s lethal Muay Thai combinations.

Jedrzejczyk easily retained the Strawweight belt, banging Penne from one side of the Octagon to the other with strikes, elbows, and kicks. She bloodied Penne early and often, ravaging Penne’s face by the time the ref mercifully stopped the fight late in round three.jj4

Penne did her best to trip clinch with Jedrzejczyk in round one, and even succeeded in taking the Champion to the mat once, but for the most part Jedrzejczyk neutralized Penne, and Penne steered clear of the clinch after Jedrzejczyk brutalized her in round two.

Last night, Penne was a case of a fighter being too tough for her own good. Whereas a lesser fighter would have easily forced a stoppage, Penne kept to her feet and took the damage. Some people would call her stupid or too punch drunk to realize what was happening. I call her full of heart, an MMA veteran who went out on her shield.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is truly a star in the making. She may not be as GOATish as Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey (11-0), but she is legit, and her calm, methodical, relentless style of fighting is a true joy to watch. In my opinion, she’s also more charismatic than Rousey, and brings a certain playful trolliness to selling a fight.

Odds are Jedrzejczyk will next defend her title against the winner of the Jessica Aguilar (19-4)Claudia Gadelha (12-1) fight August 1 at UFC 190. Whether it’s a rematch with Gadelha or meeting the legendary JAG for the first time, the real winner of that fight will be the fans.

Jedrzejczyk and Penne won FOTN bonuses for their bout.
