UFC 190’s Jessica Aguilar on upcoming debut against Claudia Gadelha: “I am training like I’m fighting for the title.”
Newly-signed strawweight and former WSOF champion Jessica Aguilar (19-4) makes her debut at UFC 190 against Claudia Gadelha (12-1), and she’s aware of the rumors a victory may lead to a title shot. In an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the American Top Team fighter talked about the upcoming fight and her top-ranked opponent.
“I am sure she’s pumped about it, Claudia, and we saw her last fight. I mean, in my eyes I think she won the fight. But, I do think that this is a contender fight and I am so pumped and excited about it.”
Helwani asked whether the UFC explicitly told Aguilar that it was a title eliminator.
“They have not [told me that], but things can happen. They said it can happen if I go out there and do what I need to do and show my skills and then it might happen.
“But I’m looking at this fight for now, this is my championship fight. I am training like I’m fighting for the title. So, this is the fight I’m looking at right now.”
Aguilar could very well be unwittingly training for a title fight, but she’s focused on her entree into the UFC.
“I am really excited about UFC 190, and I can’t wait to show the fans on this platform who Jessica ‘Jag’ is.”
UFC 190 airs live on PPV, August 1 at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT.
