UFC Fight Night 71 features Holly Holm vs. Marion Reneau and Sarah Moras vs. Jessica Andrade
The UFC’s mid-week card in San Diego on July 15th features two women’s fights. Boxing champion Holly Holm (8-0) faces Marion Reneau (6-1), and TUF alum Sarah Moras (4-1) fights Jessica Andrade (12-4).
Holm, a prospect long-rumored to possibly present the biggest threat to Ronda Rousey (11-0), will be fighting for only the second time in the Octagon since her debut in February against Raquel Pennington (5-5). Holm took a split decision over considerable underdog Pennington in an underwhelming performance that left her with a bloody nose.
Reneau is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu who finished her last fight by triangling Andrade at 1:54 of the first round. She also won her debut against Alexis Dufresne (5-2) with a unanimous decision. Will her jiu jitsu effectively counter Holm’s striking? She’s certainly the most skilled grappler Holm’s has faced so far.
Sarah Moras will also be fighting in the Octagon for the second time, excluding her exhibition matches on TUF. By the time Fight Night San Diego rolls around, it will have been over a year since her debut, where she also won a unanimous decision over Dufresne. Despite being on her back much of the time, she utilized her Brazilian jiu jitsu and remained active enough to take the victory from a befuddled Dufresne.
Andrade is coming off her submission loss to Reneau; this will be her sixth foray into the Octagon. Reneau broke Andrade’s three-fight win streak. Her last win was a guillotine submission of Larissa Pacheco (10-2). Andrade has won all but two of her fights by KO or submission, so we may see this fight turn into an exciting grappling match.
